'Land, Wind and Sky': A Sojourn on the Canadian Plains

On the Canadian prairie in southern Saskatchewan and Alberta, one is acutely aware of three basic elements—land, wind and sky—for often, that is all there is. In June of 2019 I spent three weeks photographing in this vast prairie region. Similar to the Midwestern prairie, the land was sometimes flat, but frequently comprised of rolling hills, and there was often a strong, steady wind. I experienced expansive open space, a stillness that induced a reassuring sense of solitude, and an enormous sky filled most of the time with a dramatic array of cloud formations ranging from towering cumulonimbus to delicate cirrus clouds.

Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) The Belted Kingfisher is a year-round resident of the prairie region, although it ranges to the north well into Canada during the summer and breeds there, and many kingfishers overwinter in Mexico and Central America. They generally live near water, since their principal diet is small fish and crayfish. They nest in burrows that they dig into earthen banks by water. They must winter where the water does not freeze so they can continue to feed on aquatic life, which they take by diving into the water.

William Ojendyk recently sent Rootstalk a collection of nightime photographs he took during a trip to the Quad Cities region, an area which comprises a complex of cities at the Iowa-Illinois border, on the Mississippi River—an area which, despite its name, includes five main cities: Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline in Illinois, and Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa. We will feature more of these photographs in a future issue; for now, we offer this image, taken on the Illinois side of the river.
